City of Hickory is prosecuting those who steal water from fire hydrants
The City of Hickory reminds residents and businesses that taking water from fire hydrants without permission is not only illegal—it’s dangerous. Unauthorized use of hydrants can lead to serious health and safety risks, damage to public infrastructure, and higher costs for everyone.
This month alone, three individuals have been criminally charged for stealing water from local fire hydrants.
Why stealing water is dangerous
Improperly accessing water from fire hydrants can have negative impacts on the City’s water system and pose health and safety concerns.
• Risk of contamination: When someone connects equipment to a hydrant the wrong way, it can cause water to flow backward into the system. This backflow can pull in harmful chemicals, bacteria, or other pollutants, putting the entire community’s drinking water at risk.
• Damage to the water system: Fire hydrants are part of a complex, pressurized system. Improper use can cause a sudden surge of pressure—called a “water hammer”—that can damage pipes, lead to costly repairs, and cause discolored water.
• Reduced fire protection: Damaged or improperly used hydrants can fail when firefighters need them most, slowing or preventing a response to an emergency.
• Higher costs for everyone: The costs associated with stolen water and repairing damaged infrastructure are often passed on to paying customers in the form of higher water rates.
Penalties for stealing water
Stealing water is a crime, and the consequences can be serious. Offenders may face fines up to $5,000, depending on the severity of the offense. The first offense is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and the second or any subsequent violation is a Class H felony.
How to purchase bulk water legally
Businesses that need access to bulk water, such as construction or landscaping companies, can do so legally by applying for a permit. Contact the City of Hickory’s Public Utilities Department at 828-323-7427 to request a permit for hydrant meter rental or to become a bulk purchaser.
